From Dream to Delivery

Midwest Regional Developer Conferences

I have been asked a few times recently about my thoughts on conferences that developers could attend within a reasonable travel distance from St. Louis. Over the years I have been very fortunate to attend and many times speak at a number of great conferences in the Midwest and am always happy to spread the word on every event I have attended (and even a few I have not attended but know to be very high quality). These are not the large national conferences such as Microsoft’s Build or a VSLive. These conferences are almost always planned and organized by a team of local volunteers and fellow software developers. They put in countless hours to schedule, plan, organize, and pull off a national quality event all while working day jobs. It’s a monumental task, and I have always been more than impressed with the output.

The following list of conferences is ordered by the date of their event in 2016 (or 2017 if the 2016 event has already been held). If your schedule and budget permit, I highly recommend attending one or more from the list below. Each conference includes a great selection of speakers presenting on a wide variety of technology topics. As a particular conference nears, their website will include a full agenda of all sessions and topics and will provide more information on other events, which would be of interest to an attendee. Each conference has a slightly different vibe and way of selecting and presenting technologies. This makes them all unique and valuable in their own way. If you find one you are interested in, follow them on Twitter or Facebook and the organizers will keep you up-to-date as their event draws near.

As mentioned above, I have been lucky enough to have presented numerous times at many of these conferences and have yet to have a bad experience or come across an event I wouldn’t highly recommend. The opportunity to be exposed to new technologies and ideas while networking with thousands of other passionate technology professionals makes the value each of these events provide worth their weight in gold.

Here is the list of whom I would recommend. If you are interested in more details on any of them and you think I can help provide those details, feel free to reach out via email. If there are similar events you know of that I have not included, please let me know this as well, and I’ll check them out and possibly grow my list.

I had the privilege of being involved in organizing this conference for its first 6 years, and it’s very near and dear to my heart. It is our local St. Louis developer conference and, if you have not been one of the 1,000+ attendees in recent years, you should plan on blocking out your calendar in October and attending this event. If you’d like to check out my recap from ArchitectNow’s involvement in the 2015 event, please have a look at this post.
